Fence Lake Area Activities and Information

Northern Wisconsin

Even though Fence Lake Condos are Located in the heart of Wisconsin's beautiful Northwoods, the area is well connected to the outside world. The Lakeland Airport (ARV) is just 20 minutes away, and Fence lake is a popular destination for sea plane pilots from all over the Midwest. Other regional airports are the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport (RHI) and the Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA).

Culture and History

Opportunities to experience Northwoods culture and history are plentiful. Lac du Flambeau offers many ways to gain understanding of the Ojibwe culture. Attend one of the traditional Indian Bowl pow wows held on Long Interlaken Lake or visit Waswagoning, a re-created traditional Ojibwe village.

Minocqua's new Campanile Center for the Arts offers a variety of live performances and art, music and theatre classes in downtown Minocqua. Northern Lights Playhouse provides area theatre performances and classes, as well. Local music concerts are also available in Minocqua’s Torpy Park throughout the summer months.

Local museums will also quickly familiarize you with the area's rich and varied past, from vast collections of early snowmobile memorabilia to in-depth studies of the logging history.

Medical

The Marshfield Clinic’s Lakeland Center offers more than 50 physicians who provide care in a variety of specialties. A recent expansion has allowed the facility to increase its number of providers and to offer a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center.

The Howard Young Medical Center was built in 1977 through a generous gift from S. Howard Young, a New York art dealer and uncle of actress Elizabeth Taylor. This 109-bed acute care facility offers general medical services, a surgery unit, a special care unit and a transitional care unit.

Shopping and Services

If shopping is what you love, you will be sure to fall in love with the unique shopping experience offered in this area. Local galleries and specialty shops in nearby Lac du Flambeau, Minocqua and Boulder Junction offer original gifts, antiques, clothing, artwork and crafts you won't find elsewhere.

In addition, several grocery, hardware and sporting goods stores offer ample variety when shopping for basic goods. Specialty shops, such as organic food stores, cheese shops, chocolate makers and meat markets, expand the area’s selections.

World-Class Fishing

Whether you are a longtime musky angler or simply taking the your kids out for their first fishing adventure, this area remains a premiere Midwest fishing destination, boasting more than 3,200 lakes, streams and ponds in Oneida and Vilas Counties.

Fence Lake which is one of the ten lakes that make up the 9,000-acre Lac du Flambeau chain of lakes. Fence Lake offers excellent angler action with its 3,500 acres of crystal-clear water, glacier-carved structure, weed beds, drop offs, sand bars and fish shelters.

In addition, the William J. Poupart Fish Hatchery transplants millions of walleye, bass and musky fry and fingerlings into Lac du Flambeau lakes each year, fortifying the future of angling here. Since 1975, Lac du Flambeau lakes have established 3 new world’s line class records for musky recorded with the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, as well.

You can also enjoy these abundant water resources in many other ways. From canoeing and kayaking to pontoon boat rides, water skiing or a lazy afternoon floating on the tube, you can't go wrong.

Hiking and Biking 

There are a number of quiet road routes around the community of Lac Du Flambeau. Two very scenic rides start in downtown Lac Du Flambeau and wind through the surrounding lake country. The first loop is around Flambeau Lake, a deep, clear lake. Much of the ride follows the shore of the lake, providing many wonderful views. The second loop is around Lake Pokegama and provides views of several different area lakes. From Lac Du Flambeau, there are many lightly-traveled roads that will take you to nearby Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters, and Price County as well as many other excellent trails

Hunting

With thousands of acres of public hunting lands in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and the Northen Highland-American Legion State Forest, this area offers an abundance of opportunities to find a variety of game species, including ruffed grouse, snowshoe hare, white-tailed deer and wild turkey. Trappers find beaver, muskrat, otter, raccoon, fisher and mink, as well.
